New Design – Kariba!

Lake Kariba (actually the world’s largest man-made dam) traps the mighty Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Today, the dam is a popular holiday destination but when the river was backed up in the late 1950’s thousands of Tonga people and countless animals were displaced by the floodwaters. I remember, as a young boy, watching the incredible wildlife rescue scenes on tv – on what was called ‘Operation Noah’; while working on this illustration, I was delighted to find that this historical documentary can now viewed on YouTube (as can one on the remarkable construction of the dam wall). Pictured in this latest African Journey Collection design of poster-prints is a pair of African Fish-Eagles with their Tigerfish catch; the skeletal remains of drowned Leadwood trees still bear testimony to the flooding.
