The Kgalagadi is a vast wilderness region shared by Botswana and South Africa, incorporating the former Mabuasehube and Kalahari Gemsbok National Parks, and a large area in-between. It is a favourite destination of adventure camping and 4×4 enthusiasts. In this design a Northern Black Korhaan watches a Land Rover Discovery as it crests a dune track ahead of an approaching thunderstorm.
I have had many memorable trips into this region, first visiting the South African park in 1979 with artists Bert Lexington and Lou Audie. Then carrying out vulture research at Kalahari waterholes in the 1980s. In 1987, a group of friends explored Mabuasehube in what we called ‘The Great Kalahari Aardvark Expedition’, travelling in my Suzuki jeep and a Land Rover Series II. In 1992, I took my wife-to-be Tracey to Nossob and Mata Mata. In 2016, Drew Paterson suggested we test drive his new Land Rover Discovery so we started inMabuasehube and ended up at Nossob.
